It is a two-day workshop designed for youth (16 participants maximum) who want to acquire and apply skills and knowledge of devised theatre. Through ensemble work, groups will learn to sensitively, creatively and responsibly create a meaningful and original short piece of theatre.
Date & Time: 14-15 July, 2-4pm.
Where: Kigali Genocide Memorial, Peace School
This workshop will be instructed by the Lithuanian artist Darius Gervinskas. He is the founder of a community theatre in Northern Vietnam (Haiphong Youth Theater) and has worked on different theatre projects and productions internationally, in Lithuania, Switzerland, Thailand, Uganda and Kenya, to name a few.
DAY 1 - Friday, 15 July
After a couple of short introductory warm-ups, students will be introduced to the art of devising through theory and examples. They will start to develop skills that are needed in this highly collaborative and experimental way of creating theatre pieces. Students will improvise scenes through various exercises under given circumstances. Through continuous practice in developing the content and structure of performances, groups will develop and finalize their products. Appropriate oral and written self-assessments and reflections will be made.
DAY 2 - Saturday, 15 July
Each of the performances will be presented to other groups that will later suggest alternative outcomes for the plot. Some performances will be adjusted with a twist in the story-line and enacted again.
Students will reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses, contributions and discoveries in the process, as well as difficulties encountered and achievements attained as a group.
Introductory Class to Devised Theatre targets young actors and theatre practitioners generally with bright personalities who want to learn or deepen their knowledge in creating their own meaningful theatre performances from scratch.
Workshop participants must be at least 18 years old and be fluent English speakers.
