Ubumuntu Arts Festival Returns, Connecting Art with Technology

Published: 5 July 2017 at 09:42

The Ubumuntu Arts Festival returns to Kigali with incredible performances from around the world. This year’s festival focuses on the intersection of art and technology and how each can come together to advance a shared sense of humanity. For the third edition, performances will connect attendees with the concepts of art and technology by bringing stories of home to life.

The three-day festival takes place from 14-16 July 2017 at the Kigali Genocide Memorial amphitheatre and entry is free for all.

The festival will also include a series of free workshops to promote humanity through art, drama, music and dance. Participants will exchange ideas on how to become champions of humanity in their communities, wherever they live. The festival will also encourage guests to be voices of positive change in a world that is rapidly transforming due to technology.

Hope Azeda, Festival Curator, says this year’s festival will touch audiences with inspiring performances that trace how art and technology can bring people together.

“When we started the festival, we aspired to grow. We wanted contemporary theatre to take shape in Rwanda by bringing together talented artists from all corners of the world. We are more than humbled that this dream is like a child grown fast. This year, we look forward to another outstanding festival about humanity, with a unique blend of art and technology. I invite everyone to attend this free event at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.”

To nurture an interest in the arts by young people and for young people, the first day of the festival is dedicated to young audiences. The aim is to motivate young people to be part of the vibrant world of performing arts and to use technology for social good.

Ubumuntu is the Kinyarwanda word for ‘humanity’, and calls for unity amongst all peoples of the world, promoting love and inclusion and rejecting hatred and discrimination.
